Winter Journey Project Painted a Success

"I think we really helped illuminate the possibilities for marrying different artistic expressions."

In Fall 2007, WCS partnered with the Yolo County Arts Council on the Winter Journey Project, outreaching to local artists from Yolo County. Kiwanis of Woodland graciously fronted funds to help pay for supplies.

Artists were asked to create their expressions of four pieces on WCS’s Christmas 2007 program: Blow Thou Winter Wind by John Rutter, Winter Wolf by Amy Bernon, Lux Aurumque by Eric Whitacre, and Shepherd’s Joy by Mark Hayes. These expressions were then projected onto a screen behind the choir for the performance on December 16, 2007. Performed without interruption, these four pieces aimed to illustrate the cold and bitter chill of winter being overcome by the warmth and light of Christmas, spread through the shepherds in their fields. The artwork was meant to further illustrate that point.

YCAC hosted two “paint days” where budding and experienced artists could collaborate and paint their expressions while listening to recordings of the music. I myself was encouraged to try my hand at painting (and I found I really loved it!). I not only loved watching everyone’s creations, but I found it to be the most relaxing and inspiring way to spend the afternoon (they practically had to kick me out!)

The expressions were displayed at Gallery 625 for the week preceding and following the concert, WCS performing at a kick-off artist reception. The pieces were available for sale, proceeds benefitting WCS and YCAC. I was pleased that many professional artists also submitted work, lending not only their name and talent but credibility to this project.

The expressions were judged by a panel consisting of board members of YCAC and WCS and myself. The ‘Best of Show’ was Winter Wolf by Lynne Schuepbach (who also happens to sing alto in WCS). We were impressed by all the expressions and were thrilled at the opportunity to review them. The winner was featured in the newspaper and on the program cover.

Over $1600 in donations were received by the project, not only supporting our programs but lending support to future programs! Not only did we yield more than enough pieces of artwork to enhance a very memorable and meaningful performance...but I think we helped illuminate the possibilities for marrying different artistic expressions. I know I view art differently (especially after having done it myself for the first time!), but I think perhaps some of the artists might even view choral music differently.

I am very grateful to all the artists who submitted their work, to YCAC for their support, and especially to Executive Director Danielle Thomas (who also happens to sing soprano in WCS) who took my humble idea of adding art to music and not only ran with it, but scored a touchdown!

I’m setting my sights on Spring 2009, where we can do another such collaboration for “The Inner Child”.
